Secret Codes

Lucia Pica, CHANEL Global Creative Makeup and Color Designer, has developed a new Spring 2017 makeup collection for CHANEL to celebrate, reinterpret and decipher the five iconic color codes of CHANEL: red, black, gold, white and beige.

COCO CODES. The collection is a journey into the colors that shaped the life of Gabrielle Chanel. Her use of color was de ant, unexpected, elegant and bold - and always utterly original. Now a part of the very fabric and history of CHANEL, it is impossible to imagine the House without them. Yet in this collection, Lucia Pica has found a way to re-infuse these classic shades with her own elegant irreverence, breathing new life into these beloved colors, and challenging conventional modes of beauty. Rouge noir can now adorn the lips in Spring. White and beige are reimagined for nails. Red becomes younger, bolder, more audacious than ever. “I want to reverse beauty expectations and have women challenge themselves,” states Lucia Pica.

The beauty of these five exceptional colors is that they represent contrast as well as harmony: the subtle and the dramatic, the elegant and the playful, the comforting and the challenging. Each serves to enhance rather than oppose the next. “I have said that black has it all,” said Gabrielle Chanel, “white too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.” Deciding how to decipher the codes – how to wear them your own way – is all part of the game. A subtle look to inspire intrigue. A bold swipe of color to make a radical statement. COCO CODES offers an entire new register of emotional intensity, yours for the taking.

Through a variety of sheer, sparkling, matte and silky shades, COCO CODES encourages women to embrace the codes of CHANEL and reinterpret them for their own individual style. The stories of Gabrielle Chanel, Lucia Pica and every woman who touches the collection are now intertwined, transcending these codes.

“There is a sense of autobiography in what Gabrielle Chanel did. She could not help using these colors, these "codes"; this was who she was, it was her life. ” Lucia Pica

The Face

For the face, Lucia Pica has reworked the colors of the original CHANEL codes to add warmth and depth. Nowhere are the codes of CHANEL more emphatically brought to life than within the exquisite new harmonies of the COCO CODE EXCLUSIVE CREATION. Four perfect blush shades are united to create intriguing new interplays: two satin shades and two matte shades. They can be worn as blush by blending the four colors together in the simple swirl of a brush or used individually for a myriad of beauty effects. And the name of the product, COCO CODE, is beautifully embossed across the palette to christen a new beauty icon.

The shades are warm, wearable and more radiant reworkings of the original codes. A slightly peach-hued beige and even silkier honey gold provide the satin effects, dancing diagonally across the quartet. Use as highlighters or increase the play of light across the complexion. These are supported by the matte shades: a soft caramel beige that can also be used for contouring and a vibrant pink-red, which give a beautifully natural flush of color to the cheekbones.

In addition, JOUES CONTRASTE Elégance is a rosy beige blush, subtly lit with gold, that delivers a subtle hint of an outdoor glow in keeping with the first signs of Spring.

The Lips

For the COCO CODES collection, Lucia Pica created lipsticks that push the boundaries of conventional beauty by reworking the CHANEL color codes in new and exciting ways.

Red, of course, is the most iconic lipstick shade and the color that both Gabrielle Chanel and Lucia Pica wear themselves. For Spring, Lucia Pica offers two bright and vibrant takes on a classic red, each in the sumptuous, smooth texture of ROUGE ALLURE. Ardente is a youthful poppy-red coral and Indépendante is a sophisticated re-orange red.

As for silky matte ROUGE ALLURE VELVET lipsticks, the range expands with two rhapsodies on beige: the mischievous sweetness of La Secrète, a soft pale pink, and the subtle defiance of Libre, an intense rosewood-tinged beige.

The sheer glossiness of ROUGE COCO SHINE allowed Lucia Pica to indulge her passion for layering and surprise: Beige Doré is a warm, astonishingly sheer and glimmering gold. Noir Moderne, one of the collection’s true standouts, is a translucent «rouge noir», reinterpreted for Spring.

The Eyes

For the eyes, Lucia Pica was inspired by gold and beige. In two eyeshadow palettes, LES 4 OMBRES speaks of richness, opulence and also simplicity, allowing the wearer to explore these two important CHANEL color codes in both expected and surprising ways. Codes Elégants is the bolder of the two, containing a ravishing true gold, a warm platinum ideal for highlighting, a deep, intense brown and an exquisite antiqued gold. Codes Subtils is the perfect homage to modern eye makeup: gently shimmering shades of powdery rosy peach, platinum-bronze taupe, warm, intense pewter and bronzed mid-brown provide all the options for subtle day makeup and more sophisticated evening looks alike.

Two STYLO YEUX WATERPROOF add an edge and intensity to eye makeup: Noir Pétrole is a deep petrol, offsetting the rosy beiges of Codes Subtils beautifully, while Mat Taupe is an intense rust brown that delivers depth and drama to Codes Elégants.

The Nails

Nail polish makes a ready-made statement at your fingertips. The interpretation of CHANEL colour codes offered Lucia Pica the chance to create some truly definitive shades. LE VERNIS Longue Tenue Rouge Red is a fresher take on red. LE VERNIS Longue Tenue Blanc White is a translucent, opalescent milky white. LE VERNIS Longue Tenue Beige Beige is the ultimate rosy nude.

But Lucia Pica has one more playful trick up her sleeve: LE TOP COAT Black Métamorphosis. It is a ‘transforming black,’ a nail colour-boosting top coat that works like a sheer, inky black nail gloss, adding depth and intrigue when painted over another colour. It works particularly well with LE VERNIS Longue Tenue Rouge Red.

“With the nail varnish I liked the idea of "top coats" and their ability to transform colour,” explains Lucia Pica. “It's the next logical step after the layering concept, which I already put into place, except that here it is a nail enamel."

With its truly new effects and application, LE TOP COAT celebrates the customizable nature of the COCO CODES collection.
